After graduating from the course in 2014 I launched my events styling company Shiny People Events in the following year here in Birmingham. Since then, we’ve had the pleasure of working on some incredible projects, including building installations for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, styling live stream sets for drinks brand Alpro, and decorating Birmingham New Street Station’s Christmas tree. We style festivals, weddings, corporates and everything in between. 

Although the focus of Shiny People is generally events, the business has organically grown into an overall creative production company. I remember saying in my interview that I wanted to work in so many different areas and I didn’t know if that would be possible. I wanted to design window displays, sets for music videos and to design for festivals. The degree helped imagine a career working in 3D and I’m proud to say I’ve built a business that has covered working in so many of the spaces that I mentioned back then. Learning such a variety of skills over the course really helped me to adapt to working in so many varied environments. Whatever the creative brief, our intention is always to say ‘yes’ and to figure out the means afterward! It’s always challenging and exciting.

Most recently we were asked to install the set for Birmingham City Football Club’s new away kit which was a new experience for us being involved in a high-profile photoshoot. Inspired by the blue band across the shirt we angled fabric to create a multi layered set for the players to stand in. Working alongside so many different other industry professionals and collaborating on projects like this has been so fulfilling over the years. 

Moving forward I hope we continue to work in a variety of industries, and I’d particularly love to work on more large-scale interior design projects. Redesigning one of the rooms at XOYO nightclub in London is still one of my proudest moments and it’s the best feeling knowing thousands of people are enjoying the space you designed week on week.
